KITNA, App for the Visually Impaired

September 18, 2019

QBurst has developed an AI-based application to identify currency notes issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Aptly named KITNA (meaning ‘how much’ in Hindi), the app uses the phone’s camera to detect currency notes and proceeds to speak the denomination.

KITNA app recognizes Indian currencies

Developed for people with low vision, KITNA is a simple, easy-to-use mobile app. Users can open the app and point the phone camera at the currency to hear its denomination read out. No clicks are needed.

The recently launched RBI notes of Rs 200 and Rs 50 denominations have particularly come under the scanner for being unfriendly toward the visually challenged, with the Delhi high court asking RBI to review them. QBurst’s application provides a quick and effective solution to this problem of inaccessibility and exclusion.

KITNA is free and available for both Android and iOS users.
